Collaging Your Own Fits (Challenge #14)
Explore your personal style at the comfort of your home
We’ve all been there, you’re at a store and find a piece you love but are not sure how to style it. Or there’s a fit you come across online that you want to recreate, but add your own twist.
For this week’s challenge, I wanted to do something a little different. It requires you to take a look at your clothing and essentially be your own personal stylist.
The reason I was interested in doing this challenge, is because I love fashion, clothing and essentially dressing myself up to express who I am. I think part of the reason I love fashion so much is that it reminds me of playing dress up as a child, and just in general finding fun ways to pair colors is exciting to me. I think that when it comes to fashion, however, it can be difficult to find yourself in your clothing or your own personal “aesthetic” with fashion videos and influencers on media promoting items or telling you what to wear or the latest trend. It can be challenging and overwhelming to find exactly what you like, without imitating what others are wearing. I like this challenge or this idea in general because it allows me to take different pieces or items of the outfits I like and curate them to fit what I like.
Where did I get this idea? Well, there is one content creator I enjoy getting outfit and fashion advice from, and her name is Laini Ozark. The idea for this week’s challenge was inspired by one of her videos I came across a while back, titled “ Outfit Roulette” on YouTube. This video, attached below, is a good reference if you are trying to visualize the process, as well as if you are interested in using Canva as your application of choice to engage in the challenge.
The whole point of this challenge is selecting items that speak to you, therefore there is no right or wrong in doing this. Given the new accessibility to technology and clothing, why not be your own personal stylist? Just imagine this is the virtual version of window shopping at the mall! You aren’t necessarily purchasing at the moment for instance.
This activity may be helpful for you for different reasons:
You want to explore your closet and want to try different combinations.
You are interested in changing or developing your style but don’t want to spend any money in the process of doing so.
You just are looking for a fun activity to do in your free time!
Guide:
The information and details provided below will assist you in creating/developing your virtual wardrobe:
For this project, you will need to use an app that allows you to upload and cut images (i.e., Procreate, Google Docs, Canva).
Now open up websites of your choosing that are inspiring to you. For this project, I used Pinterest since I saved different outfit pieces on there, but feel free to go look at different clothing websites or social media posts of fits that are inspiring to you or catch your Pinterest.
Look into shirts, tops, jackets, necklaces, rings, etc anything you can think of that you feel will complete your dream fit.
Once you have found the items you are interested in to create the outfit of your choosing, open up an editing app (examples listed above)
After that, copy and paste those images into your editing doc (cut the pictures using the designated cut tool for the app you are using if you want, I didn’t for this project). For Procreate there is a cut function in the upper-hand corner that you can use.
If you want you can label each clothing item to see which would match a specific occasion ( I did this in the examples below)!
Repeat the steps from before and you have an outfit, make sure to accessorize with shoes, jewelry, and other accessories to jazz it up (if you want)!
Tips:
If you want to make this process more applicable to you, you can take pics of different items in your actual closet at home!
You don’t have to do this virtually! You can also do a mini collage with different outfits you see in magazines or books if you’d like! All you need is scissors and paper!
