Our Challenge:
Make a beat/theme song for a scene/intro/outro of your favorite show!
Thank you Avia for this challenge!
Avia specifically challenged me to make a beat/theme song for a One Piece scene/intro/outro. One Piece is my favorite story/universe/epic ever!
If you don’t know about One Piece, it’s an epic in the literal sense. Over 1000 chapters of a pirate crew adventuring through an earth-like planet stopping at islands while discovering the secrets of the world. To put it as shortly as I can.
Let’s get into the Challenge!
Choosing what you want to do
Avia gave us a good amount of creative liberty for this challenge. We can either create a beat or a theme song. We can also choose a scene, intro, or outro for which this beat or theme song will be for. There’s a decent amount of wiggle room in there.
I chose a beat for a scene.
Now I had a very specific scene that came to my mind from the get go. This scene is iconic and when I first watched this scene it got engrained into my mind. Mind you there are over 1000 episodes of this show. It’s a very critical portion of the show. But, I don’t really think this scene gives any spoilers if you don’t have any context.
Now that we have the scene, we have to create the beat.
Let’s go into this with an open mind! If you have little to no experience making music (like me) do not be intimidated (like me). We’re doing this for fun.
Now how you go about the actual creation process of your song is completely up to you. You can start from scratch and use your computer’s keyboard as an actual keyboard to play notes and create arrangements with different digital instruments. You can record your voice or IRL instruments. You can also sample from the scene and create a beat that way.
I decided to sample from the scene. I went through the scene and found different sounds I found interesting. I then cut them up and began to arrange them on the timeline. I added effects to them to make them sound more “instrumental” and just did my best.
Now, is my beat the best by any means. Absolutely not. Does this beat show my absolute lack of knowledge as to how to create a song? Absolutely. But, it was fun to create something that I normally do not tackle. It was also fun creating it to a piece of media that I am very fond of.
Here’s what I ended up with:
Creating doesn’t need to be serious all of the time. It doesn’t need to be good all of the time. We also don’t need to scrap the projects we deem as bad. Have fun with the challenge. Create for yourself. Laugh. Get frustrated. Learn something new. Enjoy the process!
